From the Knabe Mankowitz Collection

A special collaboration between Walter and renowned English rock and roll photographer, Gered Mankowitz.

The sixth in the collection is Billy Idol, titled “Billy ‘78”. This edition of 220 pieces was created using a black and white photo taken in 1978 at Gered’s London Great Windmill Street studio while shooting Billy’s band Generation X for their first studio album sleeve. He shot a series of individual portraits on his large format camera, and this shot of Billy had a simplicity and power that has proved to be timeless. Gered loved this shot so much that it was used as the flagship image for his first London exhibition in 1981.

Walter and Gered collaborated to capture Billy’s rock and roll/punk vibe by using a strong painterly look with bold florescent colors to create his expressive t-shirt. Billy’s spiked edgy hair embodies his amazing, genuine eccentric look and the essence of the punk movement of the late 1970s. The contrasting white and black colorway complete the dramatic look and feel of this print.

The 27” x 18” piece is signed by both Knabe and Mankowitz. It blends Knabe’s signature hand crafted screen printing and hand printed detail, using 21 paint colors with separate screens layered on tactile paper.

A certificate of authenticity, signed by both Walter Knabe and Gered Mankowitz, will be provided along with the purchase of the screen print.
